World Oceans Day |
Event Details >> |
| | |
As a result of a United Nations General Assembly resolution passed in December 2008, World Oceans Day is now officially recognized by the UN as June 8th each year.
The concept for a "World Ocean Day" was first proposed in 1992 by the Government of Canada at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and it had been unofficially celebrated every year since then. Since 2002, The Ocean Project and the World Ocean Network have helped to promote and coordinate World Oceans Day events worldwide. We help coordinate events and activities with aquariums, zoos, museums, conservation organizations, universities, schools, and businesses. Each year an increasing number of countries and organizations have been marking June 8th as an opportunity to celebrate our world ocean and our personal connection to the sea.

Houston Urban Gardeners will meet Wednesday June 9 at 6:30 PM at the
Houston Garden Center, 1500 Hermann Dr. in Hermann Park, Houston

information on “Finding an Urban Gardening Site.” The most common reason
people have prevents them from growing their own food is that they live in
an apartment and don’t have a yard or access to land. Jim will talk about
all the possibilities: container gardening, sharecropping, community
gardens, city vacant lots, and online match-ups for people that have land to
connect with people wanting land.
Our meetings remain FREE and inclusive–everyone is invited. We will
have light snacks and cold drinks. So come on down, learn about all the
ways we have access to land, and meet and talk with some like-minded people.

Activities for all ages, native plant sale, birding, educational games, seining, and much more!
Houston Audubon’s Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary has been recognized by the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network as an important resting and feeding location for migrating shorebirds from throughout the Western Hemisphere. Bolivar Flats is a unique area combining salt marsh, mud flats and beach, each habitat quite different from the other. Every year hundreds of thousands of birds discover that Bolivar Flats is a special place. We want you to discover how amazing this ecosystem is. FUN on the FLATS celebrates the birds and their habitat on Bolivar and highlights the critical need for protection and appreciation of this special place. JOIN US – June 12, 2010. This Project is supported by TogetherGreen, an Audubon program with funding from Toyota. Support is also received from ERM Foundation-North America.
To reach the sanctuary: Turn right off of Highway 87 onto Rettilon Road (3.8 miles from ferry). Turn right on the beach and drive to the vehicular barrier.

Don’t miss your chance to take a look under the hood of the designs, hydrographic data and economic comparisons produced by the finalist teams in the recent HLWSF Low Impact Development Design Competition.
Each finalist team will offer an expanded version of their finals presentation and they, along with some of the expert judges, finals jury panel and sponsors will be available to answer your questions about their conclusions. This is a great opportunity to learn why the competition generated so much excitement about designing with LID practices to improve water quality, reduce runoff, improve quality of life, and save money in the process.
